Antanetivory is on the road to Miandrivazo 186 km South of the capital Antananarivo.

Like most villages in rural areas, Antanetivory is a very poor community. Widespread poverty means that few children have anything to eat or drink between leaving home and returning from school several hours later. This, and the long distance to the nearest primary school results in many parents keeping their children at home, and they receive no formal education.

In 1979 the local community pooled their meagre resources and built a small, two classroom primary school.  A few years later each classroom was divided in two and separated by thick cardboard and planks to accommodate more children at the upper levels. The 4 tiny classrooms can no longer accommodate all five levels - the temporary solution to which is for some children to attend school in the morning and the rest in the afternoon. But this reduces the number of hours lessons each child receives from 32 to 27 a week, making it difficult for teachers to cover the entire syllabus and prepare the children properly for their exams.

The building is now in a very poor state and needs renovation. The school is over-crowded and conditions in the classrooms are squalid.  When it rains the children are sent home because the roof leaks - making it difficult to continue classes.
