Ambodinampany school roof and floor replacement

The village of Ambodinampany in Madagascar needs to replace the roof and floor in their school. The total cost is £2,984 and Adsum is contributing £1,492. We need £1,492 from you to match our contribution and make this possible.

Ambodinampany, located 90 kms west of the capital,  Antananarivo and the Mayor has asked for help in improving conditions for children attending a small primary school by replacing the roof and cementing the floor.

In 2007  members of the local community used their own resources, labour and readily available materials to build the first primary school in the village. The school consists of two classrooms.  It has a thatched roof, no ceiling and an earth floor. Everything was built using  basic materials.

From outside the school looks in reasonable condition.  But inside it is obvious that improvements are needed .  The roof leaks when it rains,  and teachers are obliged to send the children home.  Conditions are miserable and unacceptable - even by Malagasy standards.

This school is important for the village and surrounding area - as it is the only school available to very young children - the nearest other primary school being 3kms away.

In normal circumstances the Ministry of Education  would meet the cost of a civil servant teacher.  But due to the current political and economic crisis the Ministry's resources are virtually non-existent,  and they are unable to provide support.

Parents remain eager to educate their children,  and despite their meagre resources the Patents' Association now pays the salaries of two teachers - partly in cash and in kind (cassava and sacks of rice).

The objective is to replace the old thatched roof by a cyclone-proof roof and to cement the floor -  thus improving working conditions at the school.
